New Queer Jesus experiment alert!
In an attempt to mix things up and get my writing juices flowing, I’m trying out QJ episodes featuring “unlikely or unfamiliar character pairs”...because, why not?? I remember reading an interview featuring T.V. writer Michael Schur about how when writing an Office episode, he would push storylines featuring odd or unlikely character pairs (like Stanley and Ryan lol) to see where the stories would go. I love this idea! Let’s try it.
“Magsss! Lilith just walked in.”
“Lol Jeje I saw her. I can see–and hear–the door from up here.”
Mags is in her perfumery loft formulating a batch of scents. The Garden smells of sandalwood mixed with aged denim and a hint of must.
“Were you…looking for me?” Mags asks as she peeks her head over the railing and raises her brows to Lilith.
The two femmes (obviously) hang in the same circles, but both being introverts, and having friends/partners who are (extremely) extroverted (ahem–Jesus and Eve), have probably only ever uttered awkward greetings to each other.
“I am. May I come up?”
Mags gestures “c’mon up” with their head.
As Lilith makes the final creaky step into the loft, Mags takes her in. Black high-waisted shorts, loose black crop tee, a maroon bandana tied in her fro, a swipe of orange lipstick.
She looks cool.
“Hi.”
“Hi. What’s up?”
Lilith sits in the chair next to Mags’s desk.
“So…I originally went to see Mary. My chronic pelvic floor pain–or vaginismus–is flaring up. It tends to follow the pattern of my depression. I was hoping for an herb or salve to help soothe, release. But she told me I should come to you.”
Lilith, who had been staring at her hands as she spoke, looks up, curious.
“Ah. That’s because I have vaginismus, too.”
They make eye contact. Understanding, depth, despair, hope, relief…all contained in the silent communication of pupils and shared history.
“I can’t make it go away, obviously, or even really soothe it…but I can make you a perfume.”
Mags and Lilith sit together at Mags perfumery desk, sniffing oils and taking notes. (“Sandalwood is key–sandalwood wants you to feel safe in your sexuality.”)
An hour later, Lilith has a bottle of signature perfume in her hands, with sandalwood as the base note.
“So…how is this gonna help again?”
“It might not. But the one thing my vaginismus has taught me is my sexuality, my pelvis, my body is mine, in all its complexities and trauma and history and beauty. And creating a perfume just for me–just for you–is one way to celebrate that.”
Lilith smiles softly, nods.
“Oh…and I’m here for you. If you ever want to talk. We can be Chronic Pain Cuties together.”
“I’d love that.”
“Waaaiiiitttt I want to be in this club!!” interjects Jesus.
The two femmes stare at Jesus, their combined quiet nature powerful in this moment. Jesus, sheepishly, adds, “Jk, jk. But Lil…at least let me style an outfit for you to match this new scent!!”
The three spend the rest of the morning gathering garments, gabbing (mainly Jesus) in the dressing room, feeling solid in bodies and friendship.
